David Beckham, substituted off the pitch due to an injury in the World Cup 2006 quarter final against Portugal, witnessed England's defeat in the penalty shoot-out after Wayne Rooney was sent off with a red card. On the bench he could not hold back his tears as he knew that this might well be his last World Cup match. The next morning an emotional Beckham announced his relinquishment of England captaincy. Sad and disappointing as this ending is, no one should forget Becks's many sterling contributions to the national team over his past six years as the captain. He has forever left a mark as the football icon of his age and his talent and charisma will still shine through the years to come. Surely, one day that familiar smile and that magic kick will come back again
