Elle a une carrière cinématographique réussie, tenant des rôles principaux dans, par exemple, La Leçon de piano de Jane Campion, ou Crash de David Cronenberg.

Biographie

Elle a étudié le théâtre une année au Carnegie Mellon University à Pittsburg. Elle a ensuite déménagé à New York puis à Los Angeles où elle a partagé une maison avec l'actrice Frances McDormand et le réalisateur Sam Raimi ainsi qu'avec ses futurs collaborateurs Joel et Ethan Coen.

Elle est sortie pendant plusieurs années avec l'acteur Arliss Howard.

Elle vit maintenant avec l'acteur Gordon Mac Donald avec qui elle a eu des jumeaux en 2006.

Son rôle muet dans La Leçon de piano l'a fait connaître du grand-public et lui a notamment valu le prix d'interprétation féminine du Festival de Cannes 1993 et l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice en 1994.
