Ben Kingsley en 1983

Sir Ben Kingsley (né Krishna Bhanji le 31 décembre 1943) est un acteur britannique d'ascendance indienne (Gujarati) et un quaker.

Biographie

Ben Kingsley est né dans le Yorkshire. Il s'intéresse très tôt au théâtre et devient pensionnaire de la Royal Shakespeare Company. Il joue entre autres Othello, Hamlet et The Merry Wives of Windsor de Shakespeare, ou La Cerisaie de Tchekhov. Ben Kingsley débute au cinéma en 1972 dans Fear is the Key de Michael Tuchner. Il se fait connaître du grand public en 1982 en interprétant le mahatma Gandhi, dans le film éponyme de Richard Attenborough. Ce rôle lui vaut d’acquérir du jour au lendemain le statut de vedette internationale. Il obtient en 1982 pour son interprétation : un Oscar du meilleur acteur, le Golden Globe, ainsi que le New York Film Critic Award. Cantonnée jusqu'alors au cinéma et à la télévision, sa carrière cinématographique est alors lancée.

Il apparaît par la suite dans de nombreux films écrits par Harold Pinter, dont Trahisons conjugales. En 1987, il tourne Maurice, un film de James Ivory.

Acteur de composition, il varie ses personnages : gangster notoire dans Bugsy (Barry Levinson), champion d'échecs dans À la recherche de Bobby Fisher (Steven Zaillian), ancien tortionnaire dans La Jeune Fille et la Mort (Roman Polanski) ou Itzhak Stern, le comptable juif d'Oskar Schindler, dans La Liste de Schindler (Steven Spielberg).

Il a été anobli par la reine Elizabeth II en 2001.
